Just Like Taking Candy from a Baby   –   30 April 1940   –   WCO 26809 X   (alternate take)

RIFFS

C
&A:

Just Like Taking Candy from a Baby gets a masterful arrangement from the band’s own maestro, Fletcher Henderson…but there’s not a whole lot here for Charlie Christian.  He’s prominently heard leading the sextet on eight bars of riffs borrowed from their regular 12-bar intro to Honeysuckle Rose (Charles also used these riffs on the out chorus of his Gone with What Draft) – elsewise it’s just rhythm guitar work with the orchestra.  Both complete takes are essentially identical.  An unissued breakdown recorded between the two complete takes did not include the eight bars of sextet riffs.

First take WCO 26809 X (alternate take)
Second take WCO 26809 y (unreleased breakdown)
Third take WCO 26809 A (master take)

Incidentally, some of the fingering on the tablatures of both transcriptions is a bit discretionary – a singular exception to the norm – but they are all in the CC style and are all tenable.
