C&A:
This was the fourth time Flying Home was recorded this month (Charlie
Christian’s only October with the sextet, by the way). Charles is now on a
broadcast emanating from the ‘Empire Room’ at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
The usual four-note phrases begin the guitar solo. Then a bit further on, we
hear the now familiar E♭dim7 sequence spanning mm 12 and 13. A diatonically
transposed adaptation of the two opening four-note phrases makes an
appearance at measure 15.
Uncharacteristically the bridge doesn’t have the usual exhilaration;
instead, Charles makes this a melodic excursion – indeed, a very pretty
passage.
On the next four bars he is more unrestrained using repeated notes on
alternate strings – lively, and guitaristicly interesting. The final four
measures conclude the solo with more alternating strings but very much
different from the immediately preceding application. This last sequence is
a slightly adjusted edition of those found on the last two recorded versions
of the tune.
The final time Flying Home was recorded in the month of October 1939 but
still more would follow later on.
